TOWSON, Md. — Although it seemed rather harmless at the time it was committed, a foul on Goucher just outside the box in the 99th minute of tonight's game against Lancaster Bible led to the golden goal that allowed the Chargers to defeat the Gophers, 3-2, in overtime tonight on Beldon Field.
Ally Brown, who also tallied the first goal of the contest, took the free kick that was awarded to the Chargers and her cross was headed into the net by Karyn Harkness with :09 left to play in the first of a possible two 10-minute extra sessions, snapping a 2-2 tie that had existed since late in the first half.
The Chargers (1-1) assumed a 1-0 advantage just 2:11 into the contest on an unassisted goal Brown and they were able to maintain it until Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) answered at 38:25. The Gophers (1-2) went ahead for the first time on a goal by Kristen Gartside (Spart, N.J./Sparta) with 1:41 remaining in the opening period.
Maeve Downey (West Baldwin, Maine/Sacopee Valley) was awarded an assist on Gartside's tie-breaking goal.
Unfortunately, the Gophers were able to maintain their 2-1 advantage for only :14 before Kristina Clairmont evened the score for Lancaster Bible by tallying the 34th goal of her collegiate career.
Goucher's best chance to regain the lead in the second half was on a shot by Buskey in the 78th minute that was turned away by goalkeeper Emily Lloyd of the Chargers. The freshman forward also got off the home team's only shot during overtime.
Regan Foy (Crofton, Md./The Key School), who went the distance in goal for the Gophers, made a save on a shot by Whitney Heise at 76:42 and another on an attempt by Harkness at 88:48. She finished with six saves.
