CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Goucher made the most out of a limited number of scoring opportunities this afternoon to register a 3-0 victory over Washington (Md.).
The Gophers (2-1) had managed only one shot before Sam Schlosburg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) set up a goal by Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) exactly 11 minutes into the second half, ending the scoreless tie.
They would take only three more shots the rest of the way, but still were able to tack on a pair of insurance goals. Kristen Gartside (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) was on the receiving end of a pass from Maeve Downey (West Baldwin, Maine/Sacopee Valley) when she tallied a breakaway goal at 66:47 and later Buskey collected her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 78:23 to complete the scoring.
For the game, the Shorewomen (0-3) owned a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
In just the fifth start of her career, junior goalkeeper Regan Foy (Crofton, Md./The Key School) earned her first shutout by making four saves.
The win was just Goucher's second over Washington since 1998, but it evened the all-time series between the two in-state rivals at 3-3-1.
