Gibbons' Second Goal in 74th Minute Puts Royals Ahead 2-0
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher stayed within a goal of Scranton into the 74th minute this afternoon before the Royals, picked as co-favorites to win the Landmark Conference title in 2011 in a preseason poll, tacked on a second goal and earned a 2-0 victory over the Gophers.
The game remained scoreless for only 2:21 before the Royals (5-1-2, 1-0 Landmark) assumed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Sarah Gibbons, who was able to chip a cross from Christina Cognetti that stayed close to the playing surface past the goalkeeper.
Gibbons also tallied the goal at 73:09 that put Goucher in a 2-0 hole. This time she was on the receiving end of a pass from Lauren Hasty and delivered a floating shot from appoximately 25 yards out.
It was only the second goal the Gophers have allowed in the second half of any of their first six games of the season.
It wasn't until they trailed by two goals that the Gophers (3-3, 0-1 Landmark) were able to get off their one and only shot of the contest. The attempt, taken by Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's) in the 79th minute, was on goal, forcing Scranton goalkeeper Kelsy McAnelly to make a save in order to preserve the shutout.
