Kettner Contributes Goal, Assist to Win Over In-State Foe
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher, which has alternated wins and losses the entire season, moved back above .500 by knocking off McDaniel, 2-1, tonight on Beldon Field.
Following a scoreless first half in which the Gophers (4-3) enjoyed a slim 8-4 advantage in shots, the home team grabbed a 1-0 lead at 61:43 on a goal by Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's) set up the goal with a perfectly placed through ball.
Kettner also had a hand in Goucher's second goal as her cross was knocked into an open net by Kristen Gartside (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) at 65:24.
The Green Terror (1-5) were awarded penalty kick in the 86th minute for an aggressive foul in the box against the Gophers. Julia Pope successfully converted the attempt, cutting Goucher's lead in half.
Over the final 4:07, however, the only shot taken was by the Gophers, who finished with 19 compared to eight for their opponent.
Regan Foy (Crofton, Md./The Key School) started in goal for Goucher and made two saves while playing all 90 minutes to lower her goals-against average to 1.01.
The win was Goucher's first in 11 years in the series between the two in-state rivals. Since the Gophers defeated McDaniel, 3-2, back in 2001, they've gone 0-4-2 against the Green Terror.
