First-Time Award Made Possible by Gifts to Blue & Gold Society
TOWSON, Md. — The 2010-11 All-Goucher Team was introduced during a ceremony this afternoon on Beldon Field prior to the women's soccer team's Landmark Conference game against Susquehanna.
The All-Goucher Team is a new award made possible by generous gifts made by alumnae and alumni, parents and friends to the Blue & Gold Society, and it represents the 10 most distinguished student-athletes and the most outstanding coach at the school during an academic year as selected by a panel of head coaches and athletic administrators. In choosing the 10 student-athletes to make up the inaugural All-Goucher Team, the panel placed the top five on the first team and the remaining five on the second team. In addition to being on the first team, the top vote-getter is also the team’s designated captain and was recognized as such during today's ceremony.
Here is the 2010-11 All-Goucher Team, starting with the
second-team selections, followed by the Coach of the Year and the
first team, finishing up with the captain:
Matt Lynch
Men's Lacrosse --- Captain, First Team
For the second year in a row, Matt Lynch appeared as an honorable mention when the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association revealed its Division III All-America Team for 2011 and with another year of eligibility remaining, he could become just the second player in the history of Goucher’s men’s lacrosse program to be a three-time All-American. He started all 17 games last season as the Gophers went 11-6 and reached the finals of the Landmark Conference postseason tournament. He contributed 30 goals and 26 assists; in addition to his 65 points, he finished with a .323 shooting percentage, 47 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. He’s also a two-time first-team selection at midfield on the All-Landmark Conference Team, having been so honored in 2010 and 2011. Through his first three seasons at Goucher, he’s had at least one point in all but three of the 50 games the Gophers have played and those three games in which he didn’t have at least one goal or an assist were all when he was a freshman.
Rory Averett
Men's Lacrosse --- First Team
Goucher placed a total of six players on the 2011 All-Landmark Conference Men’s Lacrosse Team and all Rory Averett had to do to be one of them was set a new single-season school record with his 53-goal effort, which made him both the first player in the history of the Landmark Conference to surpass 50 goals in a season and Goucher's all-time leader in goals with 138 during his career, which still has another season remaining. He supplied the Gophers with at least one goal in all 17 games last season, including eight in a 19-13 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the most by a Goucher player since Pat Tracey delievered nine goals in a 20-4 triumph over York back in 2004.
Amory Brandt
Equestrian --- First Team
After finishing in third place in the IHSA Zone IV region I high point rider standings for 2010-11, Amory Brandt had a spectacular postseason representing Goucher. It started with a first-place performance in open equitation on the flat at the Zone IV Region I Championships, at which she was also awarded third place in open fences. She advanced in both phases to the Zone IV Championships where she again placed first in open flat to earn a spot at the IHSA National Horse Show. There, in a field of 16 of the nation’s top collegiate riders, she finished in seventh place. Brandt was also part of a three-rider team that represented Goucher and placed fourth out of the nine riding programs which competed at the 34th annual National Intercollegiate Equitation Championship conducted by the American National Riding Commission. All competitors were required to take a written test made up of questions relating to the theory of forward riding and horse science/horse management. Brandt earned the top score (98.0) in the written examination, plus she placed sixth in the medal phase.
Justin Dunn
Men's Lacrosse --- First Team
Two players from Goucher’s 2011 men’s lacrosse team were recognized as being among the best at their positions in the nation as honorable mentions on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division III All-America Team. One of them was senior defenseman Justin Dunn, who repeated as a Division III All-American after leading the Gophers with 46 caused turnovers and ranking second on the team in ground balls (53). One of only four male lacrosse players in school history to ever be named a Division III All-American and a three-time All-Landmark Conference selection, Dunn holds the school records for most caused turnovers in a game (7), a season (59) and a career (140).
Jaclyn Kellon
Women's Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field --- First
Team
Goucher produced the first-place finisher in both the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles at the 2011 Landmark Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In fact, the same individual won both of those events. She also ran the final leg on Goucher's first-place entry in the 4 x 400-meter relay and also competed in the 4 x 100-meter relay, helping that unit finish in second place. For accomplishing all of that, Jaclyn Kellon was selected the Landmark Conference Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in balloting by the conference's six head coaches. Kellon's winning time of :59.32 in the 400 dash was a new outdoor school record and she successfully defended her outdoor conference title in the 400 hurdles by completing the event in 1:05.51. Kellon also placed first in the 400-meter dash at the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships to become Goucher’s Goucher's first champion in an individual event in the sport of indoor track and field in the four-year history of the Landmark Conference.
Meaghan Lee
Women's Tennis --- Second Team
As a sophomore, Meaghan Lee was a first-team selection on the 2011 All-Landmark Conference Women’s Tennis Team in both singles and doubles. Playing primarily at No. 2 in the line-up, she went 11-7 in singles play during the 2010-11 season, which included an undefeated 5-0 record in Landmark Conference matches. Lee was partnered with then-sophomore Addie Maxwell to form one of the three doubles pairings that earned first-team recognition from the head coaches throughout the conference. As a doubles team, Lee and Maxwell won 10 of the 13 matches in which they competed together and went 5-0 in their five Landmark Conference matches.
Kelsey Myette
Women's Cross Country --- Second Team
There were 71 runners in the 2010 Landmark Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship and Goucher’s Kelsey Myette beat 69 of them across the finish line to finish in second place. A junior competing in the sport at the collegiate level for the first time, she was runner-up to Susquehanna's Alycia Woodruff, who completed the 6,000-meter race over the rural terrain of the Goucher campus in 23:04.7, lowering the course record by nearly 55 seconds. Myette was clocked at 23:27.8, also under the former record for the course. The second-place performance by Myette, who was selected Female Rookie Runner of the Year in the Landmark Conference in a post-race vote by the conference's eight head coaches, represents the highest finish by an individual in a conference meet in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program. In addition, her time was the sixth-fastest all-time for a Goucher female running a 6,000-meter race.
Joey Negreann
Men's Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field --- Second
Team
In Joey Negreann, Goucher also produced the second-place finisher at the 2010 Landmark Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship. Like Myette, Negreann’s time of 26:49.8 was under the previous record for the 8,000-meter course, but 3.4 seconds behind the winning time posted by Moravian’s Matt Lutcza. Two weeks later, while running the ninth-fastest 8,000-meter race in the history of Goucher's men's cross country program, Negreann placed 32nd in a field of 316 runners at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships. The top 35 finishers in that race are declared all-region performers and Negreann became only the third male runner from Goucher to earn that distinction. Prior to the conference meet, Negreann placed first at the Baltimore Metro Meet, the Catholic Invitational and the Goucher Cross Country Classic.
Karli Postel
Equestrian --- Second Team
Goucher’s Karli Postel concluded the 2010-11 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association riding season as the reserve high point rider in Zone IV-Region I, finishing behind only Brittany Hill from Mary Washington. Needing to placed third or higher to advance to the next round of competition, she took top honors in open equitation over fences and second place in open equitation on the flat at the Zone IV-Region I Championships. She went on the place fourth in open fences at the Zone IV Championships. She was also part of a three-rider team that represented Goucher and placed fourth out of the nine riding programs which competed at the 34th annual National Intercollegiate Equitation Championship conducted by the American National Riding Commission. Postel posted the highest score (26.70) in the medal phase, plus she placed third in hunter trials and 10th in dressage sportif to finish in fifth place in the overall individual results with a score of 82.86.
Sisley Pumilia
Women's Soccer --- Second Team
Sisley Pumilia wrapped up an outstanding four-year career as one of the all-time leading scorers in the history of Goucher’s women’s soccer program by earning numerous postseason honors in 2010. Not only was she a first-team midfielder on the 2010 All-Landmark Conference Women’s Soccer Team, but she also became only the second female soccer player from Goucher to earn all-region honors when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America made her a third-team selection on its 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru Division III Women All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team. Including the seven goals and three assists she contributed while starting all 16 games last season, she finished her career ranked second all-time in goals (39) and points (93) and fourth in assists (15).
Patte Zumbrun
Equestrian --- Coach of the Year
Patte Zumbrun has held the position of equestrian director at Goucher College since 1987 and her riding team had another outstanding season in 2010-11 as the reserve high point college in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s Zone IV-Region I. In addition, she guided Goucher to a fourth-place finish at the 34th annual National Intercollegiate Equitation Championship conducted by the American National Riding Commission.
