TOWSON, Md. — Through one game at least, there are no signs of Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) experiencing any sort of a sophomore slump in her second season at Goucher.
Buskey, who was selected women's soccer's Rookie of the Year in the Landmark Conference last year, supplied the Gophers with a goal and an assist as they launched their 2012 campaign successfully this afternoon on Beldon Field, pinning a 2-0 setback on Lancaster Bible.
Buskey set up the goal that snapped a scoreless tie that lasted into the 73rd minute. After finding space in the midfield, the sophomore forward was able to chip the ball to freshman forward Dani Meir-Levi (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), who knocked it over the charging keeper.
The Gophers (1-0) went up 2-0 on a goal by Buskey with just under seven minutes remaining. Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's), who carried the ball around the defense before delivering a cross to Buskey at the 6, was awarded an assist on the play.
Freshman Lexi Rudolph (Kensington, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), making her first start in goal for Goucher, earned the shutout by making four saves.
By defeating the Chargers (0-1), the Gophers improved to 4-4 in season-opening contests in the eight seasons Tati Korba has been the head coach.
