Puopolo Turns In Two-Goal, Two-Assist Performance
TOWSON, Md. — Even though Goucher got off to a 3-0 start this season, the Gophers were unable to score a goal in the first half of any of their first three contests. That changed tonight at home against Notre Dame (Md.).
Six minutes in, Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored the first her two goals, coralling a ball cleared by Kitty McIlroy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School), shaking a defender and depositing the ball into the net. The Gophers (4-0) managed to tack on four additional goals before the end of the first half on the way to an 8-0 triumph over the Gators.
Just past the 20-minute mark, Goucher scored twice in under 60 seconds to extend the lead to 3-0. First, Katherine Matthew-Parker (New Orleans, La./St. Martin's Episcopal) placed home a chip across the goal mouth on a rebound; just 42 seconds later, Sarah Eaby (New Holland, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School), who was credited with the assist on Matthew-Parker's goal, tallied a goal of hew own, knocking in a rebound.
Following Buskey's second goal, Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's) closed out the scoring for the first half by racing down the wing after a misplay by the Gators (3-1) left her alone in opposing territory.
Puopolo assisted the first two goals in the second half, both of which was scored by Caroline McDowell (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond Central), and then completed a two-goal, two-assist performance with a goal at 81:04.
Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) made her first start in goal for the Gophers and earned the shutout by making a save on Notre Dame's only shot during the second half. Through the first four games of the season, two freshmen goalkeepers have a combined 0.00 goals-against average through 360 minutes for Goucher.
