Scoreless Streak Exceeds 500:00 Before Cavaliers Put One In
TOWSON, Md. — For the first time all season, Goucher surrendered a goal today. In fact, Cabrini managed to score twice.
Fortunately for the Gophers, they enjoyed two-goal leads both times the Cavaliers were able to put one in and head coach Tati Korba's squad was able to hang on for a 3-2 victory.
Despite being outshot, 8-4, in the first half, the Gophers (6-0) got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) at 27:40. After saving the ball on the end line, Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) played it low into the box to Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's); Puopolo continued the ball to the 6 where Kettner beat a defender to gain possession and slid it home.
Goucher's lead grew to 2-0 at 39:35 on Buskey's team-leading seventh goal of the season. She took a long through ball from Staci Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y./Pleasantville) and, after beating a defender, chipped a shot over the keeper.
Buskey, who was the Rookie of the Year in the Landmark Conference last season, now has multiple points in five of the six games in 2012.
The Crusaders (1-4) closed to within 2-1 on a goal by Julianna Ardire at 54:32, but less than four minutes later, the Gophers went back up by two thanks to a goal by Puopolo. Amid a scramble, Buskey toe-poked a ball back to Puopolo who floated in a long shot from outside the box.
An unassisted goal by Cabrini's Noelle DiCioccio with 6:04 remaining again reduced Goucher's lead to one, but the Cavaliers were not able to get off any more shots the rest of the way.
Ardire's goal in the 55th minute ended the longest consecutive scoreless streak within the same season in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program at 504:32. The previous mark of 443:31 was established back in 2003.
Still, the six-game winning streak matches the longest in program history. In 1994, the Gophers also opened the season with six straight victories before losing to Mary Washington, 6-0.
