Royals Finish with 18-5 Edge in Shots in 3-0 Triumph
SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher's eight-game undefeated streak dating back to last season came to an end today when the Gophers were handed a 3-0 setback by Scranton in the first Landmark Conference game for both teams in 2012.
All of the scoring in today's contest was confined to the first half. The Royals (3-4-2, 1-0 Landmark) assumed a 1-0 advantage at 23:28 when Samantha Russo was able to tap-in a ball from 14 yards out that was delivered from the left sideline by Ellen Walker.
Michaela Arbus was in position to knock in a rebound following a keeper save at 34:29, extending Scranton's lead to 2-0. The final goal of the contest was scored at 37:11 by Gianna Vitolo, who was able to put in a cross from Megan Manzo from in front of the box.
The Gophers (7-1, 0-1 Landmark) had a chance to get on the scoreboard first, but a shot by Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) in the 13th minute was turned away by goalkeeper Kelsy McAnelly. McAnelly had to make only two saves — the other was on a shot by Gaby Davis (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) early in the second half — to earn the shutout.
The Royals finished with an 18-5 edge in shots.
