Harkavy Remains Perfect in Net With Six Saves
WESTMINSTER, Md.— Each team had plenty of chances, but the game remained scoreless until a golden goal in the 102nd minute gave the Gophers their most wins since 2003.
McDaniel (4-4) controlled the pace of the game throughout the first half, taking a 6-1 advantage in shots into intermission. With neither team earning many good chances, the teams remained level at the break.
The game opened up in the second half with each team coming close to finally breaking the deadlock.
At 54:03, Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) took advantage of a misplay down the wing, getting off a strong shot for Goucher (8-1), which just slipped wide.
McDaniel's best chance came in the 75th minute, when Katie Little ripped a shot to the right of Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway), who made a sprawling save then knocked down two point-blank rebounds to keep the Green Terror off the board. The sequence amounted to half of Harkavy's six saves on the day. The freshman keeper has not allowed a goal in her three games this season.
After a desperation shot at the buzzer hit the post, the Green Terror were forced to settle for overtime despite holding a 17-5 edge in shots.
Just seconds into the first overtime period, McDaniel finally got the ball past Harkavy, but the goal was overruled due to an offside call by the assistant official.
One minute into the second overtime, Goucher took advantage of their redemption opportunity. Playing from the left wing, Kettner fed a cutting Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) near the corner of the box. The forward ripped a shot from right outside the box, beating the keeper in the far top corner and instigating a celebratory pile on the field.
With the win, the Gophers extend their winning streak against the Green Terror to two games after having not defeated the team since 2001 previously.
"This was a huge win for us, showing we can bounce back after our first loss of the season," head coach Tati Korba said. "We made some tactical adjustments and showed a lot of character today by earning this victory."
