Goucher Improves Playoff Position, Moves Up to Third Place
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Gophers were held scoreless for nearly 70 minutes, but two quick goals from Katherine Matthew-Parker (New Orleans, La./St. Martin's Episcopal) and Sherlanda Buskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) turned the tide, completing a hard-fought comeback win.
In a game head coach Tati Korba called a "must-win," Goucher fell behind early on a goal by Tara Brancato just over halfway through the first period. Susquehanna (4-7-2, 0-2-2 Landmark) took advantage of a counter opportunity off a Goucher (11-2, 2-2 Landmark) corner kick to take the early lead.
Susquehanna's tenuous lead remained one through 70 minutes as Goucher missed on a number of breakaway opportunities.
Matthew-Parker finally broke through for Goucher with the clock showing 20:02, ripping a shot to the far post from 15 yards off a feed from Gaby Davis (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia).
Less than six minutes later Davis earned her second assist, giving the Gophers the game's winning margin. The freshman defender crossed a long pass finding Buskey in the box. The leaping Buskey timed the pass perfectly, heading the ball at the apex of her jump, turning it into the net to give the team the lead.
After surrendering the lead, Susquehanna only managed one shot, taken by Angela Amato. Amato's shot was on target, requiring a Lexi Rudolph (Kensington, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) save, her third of the game.
With the win Goucher evens up its conference record at 2-2, good for third in the Landmark Conference with two games remaining. The team takes on Catholic in Washington, D.C., this Tuesday before closing out the conference season at home on Saturday, hosting Moravian.
