Harkavy Pulls Within One Shutout of Team Season Record
TOWSON, Md. — None of the game's 27 shots tonight found the back of the net, leaving the two teams level at the end of 110 minutes.
Despite the lack of goals, each team had multiple chances.
All four first-half shots belonged to Goucher (11-4-2), three of which required saves. The best opportunity in the frame came when Sarah Eaby (New Holland, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) found herself with possession on the wing and sent a left-footed shot to the far side of the net. Victoria Wyand made a diving save to her right to keep the game scoreless.
Wynad was needed again in the second half when Katherine Matthew-Parker (New Orleans, La./St. Martin's Episcopal) made a tremendous diving challenge to earn the ball just outside the box and passed it on to Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). Kettner attempted a near-post shot but Wynad was up for the challenge, knocking it wide.
Marymount (6-7-1) did not attempt a shot until 52:26, but the team's first attempt was a dangerous one. After Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) left the box to clear a loose ball, a deflection left Shannon Bisselink open without the goalkeeper in sight. Her attempt from 25 yards out would have likely found the net, but Caroline McDowell (Alfred, N.Y./Alfred-Almond Central) blocked the shot.
The game nearly had its first goal off a corner kick by Gaby Davis (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) which curved onto the goal line, but Eva DeLeon cleared it just before crossing. Davis had seven of Goucher's 17 shots, four of which were on net.
Harkavy's biggest save came early in the second overtime when a two-on-one rush led to a shot by Danni Bankins. The freshman keeper knocked down the shot and jumped on the loose ball before Melissa Fessnden could knock home the rebound.
When the final horn sounded, Harkavy's three saves proved to be enough for her fifth shutout of the year, just one shy of the record set by Lauren Pozsonyi and Kellen Matthews. As a team, Goucher has now kept 11 teams scoreless this season.
With one game remaining, the Gophers still have a chance to equal the program's record for most wins in a season, 12.
