SWARTHMORE, Pa. — Goucher's only shot the entire second half turned into a goal by freshman midfielder Stephanie Budrock that pulled the Gophers into a 1-1 tie with Swarthmore. And when neither team could break the deadlock over the final 14:52 of regulation, today's season-opening contest for both of them went into overtime.
Before the first 10-minute extra session concluded, Swarthmore's Emma Sindelar set up a breakaway goal by Rebecca Mayeda that secured a 2-1 victory for the host Garnet.
Despite a 15-6 advantage in shots, Swarthmore owned only a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half. The lone goal was scored with five minutes remaining in the period by Sindelar, who took a through ball and beat the keeper on a breakaway to the left.
The Garnet (1-0) failed to add to their lead despite getting off 16 shots in the second half.
The Gophers (0-1) drew even in the 76th minute when sophomore midfielder Jessica Leffers sent a cross from the right side which Budrock was able to head past the keeper.
Sophomore Juliana Harkavy got the start in goal for Goucher and was credited with a total of nine saves. Five of the six stops she made in the second half prevented the Garnet from opening up a 2-0 lead.
