BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Lindsey Puopolo and Samantha Turner scored four minutes apart early in the second half to lift Goucher to a 2-0 victory over Bryn Mawr this afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy made seven saves on the way to her seventh shutout in nine career starts.
The Gophers (1-1) had a 12-4 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, but could not get anything past Valentina Viertel, Bryn Mawr's starting goalkeeper.
Goucher continued to keep up the pressure after the intermission, however, and was finally rewarded for its efforts in the 59th minute when a shot from Puopolo, Goucher's 16th of the game, was driven past Viertel. The goal was the first of the season for Puopolo, whose eight goals were second on the team in 2012.
Turner gave the Gophers some breathing room in the 63rd minute, directing a shot past Viertel for her first collegiate goal. Puopolo picked up an assist on the goal, and she now has at least one point in four consecutive games dating back to last season.
The Owls (1-1) had four shots in a row following Turner's marker, but Harkavy stopped three of them to keep them off the scoreboard.
Goucher ended the game with a 21-11 advantage in shots. Puopolo led the way with five shots, while Turner, Gaby Davis and Moriah Sipiczky each added three. Viertel made 10 saves in a losing effort.
The Gophers continue their stretch of four consecutive road games to open up the season with a trip to Cabrini next Saturday. The two teams met at Beldon Field last season, with Goucher coming away with a 3-2 victory.
