Davis Makes Game-Winning Deposit in Final Minute of OT
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher seemed headed for a second consecutive scoreless draw when today's game on Beldon Field against Hood entered the final minute of extra time without either team having put one in the goal. The Gophers even had two excellent scoring opportunities earlier in the second overtime period, but were turned away both times.
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher seemed headed for a second consecutive scoreless draw when today's game on Beldon Field against Hood entered the final minute of extra time without either team having put one in the goal. The Gophers even had two excellent scoring opportunities earlier in the second overtime period, but were turned away both times.
Then, on what was most likely the last chance to score either team would have, it was Gaby Davis (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) to the rescue. The sophomore forward unleashed a powerful free kick from long distance, depositing it into the top right corner to provide the Gophers with a scintillating 1-0 triumph over the Blazers.
The victory also extended Goucher's unbeaten streak in non-conference matches at home to 11 (9-0-2) dating back to the 2011 season.
Between them, the starting goalkeepers were called on to make only 10 saves during regulation. Leah Norris from Hood was credited with one save in the first 10-minute extra session and two more in the second OT as she finished with eight.
Davis nearly ended the game in the 107th minute when she ripped a shot from just inside the top of box that Norris was able to punch away at the very last second. Norris also came up big in the 109th minute when she denied Samantha Turner (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) on a breakaway.
Turner accounted for six of Goucher's final total of 22 shots.
Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) earned the shutout for Goucher with a total of four stops. Including today's contest and the scoreless draw against Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, the sophomore goalkeeper has not been scored up for more than 256 consecutive minutes.
