CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Junior Colleen McCawley's (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) first collegiate goal was all the offense that the Goucher women's soccer team would need this afternoon, as the Gophers came away with a 1-0 shutout win at Washington (Md.) to snap a two-game losing streak.
McCawley registered her unassisted goal in the 64th-minute, driving a loose ball in the box past goalie Melissa Barry to break the scoreless deadlock. Her first goal at Goucher came in her 37th-career collegiate contest. Goucher improves to 3-5-1 with the victory, while the Shorewomen fall to 3-4-1.
Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) made four saves in goal to record her fourth clean sheet of the season and the 10th of her Goucher career. Goucher's defense prevented the Shorewomen from getting a single shot on goal in the game's final 19 minutes.
Washington held a 4-1 shots advantage after the opening 45 minutes, but the Gophers narrowed that deficit to an 8-7 final margin with a 6-4 edge in the second half. Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's) and Stephanie Budrock (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) each generated a pair of shots to lead the offensive attack.
After a brief one-game road trip, the Gophers return to Beldon Field on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. matchup against Albright (4-3-1) in the first of three-straight home games. Goucher defeated the Lions 2-0 in the teams' matchup last September.
