YORK, Pa. — Goucher continued a stretch of three consecutive road matches this afternoon, surrendering a goal in each half in a 2-0 defeat at York (Pa.).
The Gophers (2-4-1) were a shot away from leveling things up for most of the second half, but a goal from Jordan Snook with seven minutes left on the clock doubled the advantage for the Spartans (4-2-1).
"York is a good team," head coach Tati Korba said. "We battled hard today and created some good chances up until the final 10 seconds of the game. We are moving in the right direction and our best soccer is ahead of us."
After five early shots which failed to reach goal, York took the lead in the 24th minute. Beth Bunn headed the ball past goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) after a corner kick from Traci Mohl.
Goucher had two chances to even up the score late in the first half, but shots from Kai Karrasch (San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School of San Francisco) and Colleen McCawley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) both missed the target.
Harkavy registered four saves to keep things close after the break, and the Gophers also registered a team save on a York header five minutes into the half.
After Snook's goal, Brooke Merchant (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) nearly got Goucher on the scoreboard in the final minute, but her deflected shot was pushed away on a diving stop by goalie Melanie Glessner.
The final shot total from today's match was 19-5 in favor of the Spartans. York also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Gophers will look to get back on track next Wednesday, when they conclude their three-match road swing with a 4:30 matchup at Hood.
