Gophers Bow to Greyhounds Thanks to OT Goal
TOWSON, Md. — The opposing keepers weren't tested often in today's game between Goucher and Moravian, the first Landmark Conference contest of the season for both teams. But both of them rose to the occasion when called upon and stopped every shot they had to in order to keep the game scoreless through all 90 minutes of regulation.
TOWSON, Md. — The opposing keepers weren't tested often in today's game between Goucher and Moravian, the first Landmark Conference contest of the season for both teams. But both of them rose to the occasion when called upon and stopped every shot they had to in order to keep the game scoreless through all 90 minutes of regulation.
Even junior defender Jessica Leffers (Germantown, Md./Northwest) of the Gophers prevented a goal by the visiting Greyhounds when she headed a shot by Kaylan Bruzzone out of harm's way in the 80th minute while she was guarding the right post on a corner kick.
Goucher's Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) picked up her fifth save of the contest on a shot by Kristen Schall 1:34 into overtime, but just over a minute later, Schall put one past her, scoring the goal that provided Moravian with a 1-0 victory.
The scoring play began with the Greyhounds (6-3, 1-0 Landmark) being awarded a corner kick. Schall played in a short kick, worked a give-and-go with Taylor Blake and then got off a powerful shot that found its way into the top left corner.
Moravian enjoyed a 14-8 advantage in shots during regulation and added four more to its total during the two minutes, 40 seconds of overtime that was played. Goucher's best chances to score against Jacqueline Zalis both came in the first half, but she made saves on shots by Lindsey Puopolo (Glen Arm, Md./St. Timothy's) in the 29th minute and Colleen McCawley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) in the 34th minute.
Up next for the Gophers (3-5-1, 0-1 Landmark) is a non-conference game against McDaniel on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Westminster, Md.
