TOWSON, Md. — Anja Opsahl (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) tallied two goals in the second half as Goucher opened its 2015 season with a 3-1 triumph over Bryn Mawr tonight on Beldon Field.
The Gophers (1-0) grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 31st minute on a goal by junior forward Stephanie Budrock (Clark, N.J/Arthur L. Johnson) that was assisted by sophomore midfielder Kai Karrasch (San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School of San Francisco).
The Owls (0-1) managed only one shot the entire first half, but it turned into a goal by Alice Bell at 33:34 that created a 1-1 tie.
After being held to five shots in the first 45 minutes, head coach Tati Korba's squad turned it up a couple of notches on offense in the second half and was rewarded at 68:28 when Opsahl scored the first of her two goals to put the Gophers back on top, 2-1.
Before Opsahl struck again in the 87th minute, senior goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) made her only save of the contest, stopping a shot by Bryn Mawr's Fiona Steele and preserinv her team's one-goal lead.
Freshman forward Christina Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was awarded an assist on Opsahl's goal at 86:37 that closed out the scoring. The assist on the junior midfielder's tie-breaking goal went to Budrock.
Goucher, which improved to 5-5-1 in season-opening contests under Korba, has now won the last four head-to-head encounters with Bryn Mawr, reducing the Owls' lead in the all-time series between the two schools to 8-5.
Up next for the Gophers is a game against Wesley, which posted a 5-1 victory over Cairn today. They will battle the Wolverines Saturday at 7 p.m. in Dover, Del.
