TOWSON, Md. — Goucher returned home from a four-game road trip with a five-game unbeaten streak to take on Albright tonight. The Gophers didn't come away with the win they were looking for, but by dueling the Lions to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes, they ducked their first loss of the season for at least another game.
The Gophers (4-0-2) recorded the only shot in the first half that resulted in a scoreless 45 minutes of play.
As she addressed her team at the break, head coach Tati Korba expressed her frustration and the fire was eventually lit under the Gophers in the second half as they registered two corner kick opportunities within the first two minutes of play.
Goucher kept the ball in the Lions' half of the field and the waiting finally paid off as Erica Bross received a yellow card for a foul in the box. That gave the Gophers an opportunity to get on the board with a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Brooke Merchant (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) came through, successfully booting the ball past the opposing keeper.
The momentum stayed in favor of the Gophers as they got the game's next four shots off between the 65th and 69th minutes.
With the game entering the late stages, Albright began to possess the ball for longer periods. On one occasion, it led to a corner kick in the 86th minute. Seconds later, Erica Bross headed the ball into the net for the Lions (2-2-2), tying the game at one.
After a defensive first overtime period, Goucher found the Lions' half of the field with four minutes remaining in the second overtime. In the 108th minutes, Samantha Turner (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) had two shots on goal inside the box, but couldn't push either across.
The Gophers welcome Mary Washington to Beldon Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
