TOWSON, Md. — Goucher bunched all three of its goals into the second half and senior goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) earned her third shutout of the season as the the Gophers pinned a 3-0 setback on Washington (Md.) this afternoon on Beldon Field.
After each team managed just one shot on goal the entire first half, head coach Tati Korba's squad took a 1-0 advantage on an unassisted goal by Christina Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) just 2:18 into the second period. It's the seventh time in the eight games they've played so far this season that the Gophers (5-1-2) got on the scoreboard before their opponent.
Goucher capitalized on a corner kick by Gaby Davis (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) in the 77th minute to add to its lead. The senior midfielder's entry deflected off of teammate Theresa Antkowiak-Tassone (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) and settled where Bri Hite (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) was able to bang it in.
The two players who were awarded assists on Hite's second goal of the season hooked up on the final goal of the contest at 88:35. Davis picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season when she found a wide-open Antowiak-Tassone with a pass and the freshman forward beat the opposing keeper from 10 yards out.
Harkavy, who faced only five shots, finished with three saves and lowered her goals against average this season to 0.98.
By beating the Shorewomen (2-3-1) for a fourth consecutive time, the Gophers assumed a 6-3-1 advantage in the all-time series between the two in-state rivals.
Goucher plays its first Landmark Conference game of the season in Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Moravian.
