Gophers Suffer 1-Nil Setback to Unbeaten Green Terror
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher and McDaniel both played with the kind of unrelenting effort one would expect from two teams that entered the final game of the first month of their seasons with only one loss between them. As one might also predict, tonight's game between the in-state rivals also went down to the wire.
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher and McDaniel both played with the kind of unrelenting effort one would expect from two teams that entered the final game of the first month of their seasons with only one loss between them. As one might also predict, tonight's game between the in-state rivals also went down to the wire.
What ultimately separated the two teams was a goal by Lindsey Farrell at 88:07 as it allowed the unbeaten Green Terror to escape Beldon Field with a narrow 1-nil victory.
Farrell knocked in the deflection of a shot by teammate Abby Keen that had been saved by starting goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) of the Gophers. It was the first goal the senior, who finished with seven saves, had allowed in 333 minutes and 45 seconds.
Goucher's best scoring opportunity was in the first half when Harkavy's counterpart, Sarah McDonald, made her only save of the contest on a shot by Camryn Mackey (Washington D.C./Woodrow Wilson).
The Green Terror (9-0) came into the game at No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Mid-Atlantic Region rankings.
"Great effort on our part," Goucher head coach Tati Korba commented following the game, which was played in a steady rain most of the first half and a heavy downpour at times in the second period. "I don't think anyone who was there and watched us play could come away thinking that we just tried to hang in there with them. You want the win, but I'll take that effort any day."
Tonight's contest was the opener of a four-game home stand for the Gophers (6-2-2), who will welcome Elizabethtown to Beldon Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
