Gophers Play Fifth Straight Game Decided by One Goal
TOWSON, Md. — For only the third time in 2015, Goucher trailed an opponent by more than a goal when Scranton opened a 2-0 lead today on head coach Tati Korba's squad in the 80th minute. While the Gophers weren't able to completely wipe out that deficit, they did cut it in half and made the Royals sweat before their 2-1 victory became official.
This was the fifth consecutive game in which one goal separated Goucher and its opponent at the end of regulation. The Gophers went 2-3 in those contests.
After the two teams made it through the opening 45 minutes today without a score, Scranton went ahead 1-0 when Erica Licari tallied her second goal of the season exactly 13 minutes into the second half. It would take nearly 22 minutes for the Royals (9-2-1, 3-0 Landmark) to add to their lead on an unassisted goal by Gianna Vitolo at 79:12.
Up until that point, the Gophers (7-4-2, 1-2 Landmark) had been limited to two shots, but they kept plugging away and it paid off for Jordan Harmon (Danby, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy), a freshman forward who tallied the first goal of her collegiate career at 81:36.
Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) made the start in goal for Goucher and made a total of eight saves while playing all 90 minutes.
"This was another tight loss for us and another tough one to take," Korba said. "We battled a very good Scranton team and we are so very close to getting the results that we want in conference. The last few weeks are the final push for the playoffs and we really feel as though we have yet to play our best game."
Goucher's push to make the playoffs resumes Wednesday when the Gophers travel to the nation's capital to face Catholic at 4 p.m.
