ASTON, Pa.- Goucher College women's soccer (2-0-1, Landmark 0-0-0) came out firing in a 5-1 victory over the Neumann Knights.
Neumann wasted no time scoring the first goal of the game. First-year Jess Cirone scored the first goal in her collegiate career only 1:33 into the first half, giving the Golden Knights an early advantage. Goucher looked to even the score over the next few minutes, but only managed to put one of four shots on goal in the next 10 minutes.
However, in the 15th minute, senior Sara Kast (Fresno, Calif.) tied up the game for the Gophers with a successful penalty kick. Junior Camryn Mackey (Washington, D.C.) followed shortly after, giving the Gophers a 2-1 lead. Junior Christina Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa.) assisted the go-ahead goal.
Goucher extended its lead just before the intermission when sophomore Gracie LeFevre (Glennwood, Md.) tapped the ball past Neumann's goalkeeper senior Kristen Montgomery. The Gophers took a 3-1 advantage into the break.
The Gophers continued their hot streak at the beginning of the second half, scoring two quick goals. The first from junior Courtney Kwaloff (Damascus, Md.) and the second from Yarrish, both of which came from laser shots from outside the eighteen.
In goal for the Gophers, first-year Christina Charkofsky (Eldersberg, Md.) saved five of the six shots she faced while teammate Erica Bulzomi (Syosset, N.Y.) stopped two shots on goal in nearly 30 minutes of play.
The Gophers outshot the Knights 20-13 and scored on 5-of-9 shots on goal.
Goucher plays again this Saturday, September 9th on Beldon Field at 1 p.m. versus Eastern University.
