IMMACULATA, Pa. - Senior Christina Yarrish's (Hummelstown, Pa.) goal in the 20th minute proved to the deciding factor, as the Goucher College women's soccer team got past host Immaculata, 1-0, on Tuesday.
With the win, the Gophers moved to 4-4-2 for the year, while Immaculata fell to 3-6-0 with the defeat.
In the opening frame of the contest, both squads had scoring opportunities, with Immaculata eventually outshooting Goucher, 6-4, in the frame.
Fortunately for the Gophers, sophomore goalie Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Md.) continued her strong play in net, making three saves, alone, in the first half.
Also, the Gophers were able to cash in on a scoring chance off a turnover in the first half, as Yarrish caused the turnover, then fired a shot just inside the far post of the goal to give Goucher the 1-0 lead.
The goal, which was the fifth of Yarrish's season and the 12th of her career, was the senior's third game-winner of the year to date. With five goals for the year, Yarrish has now scored more goals in a season in 2018 than in any other campaign of her career at Goucher, as well.
Up a goal, Goucher's defense was able to hold the one-score lead the rest of the game. After making a trio of saves in the first half, Charikofsky made two more saves in the second half to preserve the shutout victory, the first of the season for the sophomore goalie.
Overall in the win, Immaculata went on to outshoot Goucher, 10-8, while the Gophers held a 5-2 edge on corner kicks.
The Goucher College women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, as they leap back in Landmark Conference play at Juniata. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
