Yakim Scores Twice, Gophers Post 3-1 Win at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Emma Yakim (Bel Air, Md.) scored twice as the Goucher College women's soccer team earned a 3-1 Landmark Conference victory at Catholic University Wednesday evening.
- Catholic (5-7-1, 0-4 Landmark) put a shot on goal just 1:47 into the contest that was turned aside by Goucher (5-7, 1-3) keeper Jenna Abaza (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).
- Yakim had the first Gopher shot of the game in the 20th minute that sailed wide.
- Just past the 25-minute mark, Yakim put a shot on goal that was saved by Cardinal keeper Maeve Graham.
- Abaza made two more saves in the half, in the 31st and 37th minutes.
- Yakim put another ball on goal that Graham turned aside in the 35th minute.
- Catholic took a 1-0 just over three minutes into the second half as Katarina Bauer scored.
- The Gophers scored twice in a span of 1:18 to take a 2-1 lead.
- At the 54:26 mark, Yakim took a long cross from Lily Shaffer (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) and one-timed it off the bottom of the crossbar and in for her fourth goal of the season.
- In the 56th minute, Taylor Urie (Simi Valley, Calif. / Simi Valley) took advantage of a turnover by a Cardinal defender at the top of the box and sent a low grounder past Graham to the left side to give the Gophers the lead.
- Just over two minutes later Catholic hit the post with a shot attempt.
- Abaza made back-to-back saves to maintain the lead, including a diving stop of a Taylor Porcello high bid in the 77th minute.
- Yakim added an insurance goal with just over five minutes left when she dribbled from midfield, got through two Catholic defenders, and fired a shot past Cardinal relief keeper Molly Krzywicki.
- Catholic outshot Goucher 28-14 and had all seven of the game's corner kicks.
- Abaza made 10 saves for Goucher, matching her career high.
- Graham made three saves before being spelled by Krzywicki after the second goal, who made one stop.
- Yakim took a team-high seven shots, with five of those on target.
- Goucher earned its first win over Catholic since the 2013 season.
