TOWSON, Md. - A 1-2 finish in the first event of Goucher's home meet against Gallaudet this afternoon got head coach Tom Till's Gophers off and running on their way to their first victory of the season, a 121-73 triumph over the Bison.
First place in the 200-yard medley relay went to the foursome of Candace Crasto (Tallahassee, FL/Urbana), Kait Van Schoick (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin), Sam Sutherland (North Reading, MA/Austin Prep) and Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, PA/Lower Merion), which finished the event in 2:13.16. That was just seven one-hundredths of a second faster than the runner-up entry, which also represented Goucher.
The Gophers (1-2) also produced the winner and runner-up in the 1000 freestyle, which gave them a comfortable 30-6 lead over the Bison (0-5) after two events. Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, VA/O'Connell) touched in 12:22.15 and Alex Deffaa (Glen Rock, NJ/Oakwood Friends School) placed second (12:56.84).
Goucher pulled off a third 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke where Deffaa finished first, ahead of Crasto. Deffaa's winning time was 1:13.13, giving her the victory by 18 one-hundredths of a second over Crasto.
