Heinz Wins Two Matches to Reach Finals at First Singles

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher produced the champion of one doubles
flight and the runner-up in one of the singles flights today at the
Goucher Open.
A 6-1, 6-1 win in the opening round over Christy Calvert and Hillary Lasher from Penn St. Behrend on Saturday advanced Goucher's No. 1 doubles team of Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) into the semifinals of the first doubles draw. Pulupa and Lee squared off against Heather Morgan and Cori Wessner from Gwynedd-Mercy in the semifinals and prevailed 6-1, 6-2.
With the title on the line, Pulupa and Lee had to face one of their teammates in the finals and they posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Beth Endy from Moravian and Marina Sterngold (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter).
The champions in Flight 2 of the doubles competition were Moravian's Stephanie Cox and Alex Van Buskirk.
In Flight 1 of the singles competition, Goucher's Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) started out with a pair of wins on Friday: 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) over Elly Dannenfelser from Frostburg St. in the first round and 6-4, 6-4 over Christy Alexander from Richard Stockton in the semifinals. In today's championship match, however, Heinz suffered only her second loss of the season in singles play as she bowed to Jami Fein from Moravian 6-3, 6-2.
Two players from Goucher placed sixth in their respective singles flights: Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) in Flight 2 and Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in Flight 3.
