Navarro Caps Rally as Gophers Edge LVC

TOWSON, Md. - Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Goucher College women's tennis team won four of six singles matches to defeat Lebanon Valley College 5-4 Thursday afternoon at the Schroedl Tennis Center. First year Natalia Navarro (Francisco Morazan, Honduras / Del Campo School) clinched the match and broke a 4-4 tie with a win at No. 2 singles.
- Goucher (2-1) dropped two doubles matches to the Flying Dutchmen (2-1).
- Shelby Meek (Halethorpe, Md. / Catonsville) and Sarai Oquendo Silveira (Houston, Texas / Harmony School of Discovery) won 8-5 at No. 3.
- At No. 2, Eliza Abady (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters School) and Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) fell 8-7 after dropping the tiebreaker 7-1.
- Trailing 3-1 after an LVC win at No. 1, Goucher registered the next three points to take a 4-3 lead.
- Abady prevailed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, followed by Meek triumphing 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
- Jessica Townes (Wilmington, Del./Concord) put the Gophers in front with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3.
- At No. 5, Silveira rallied to force a third set before falling 6-0, 3-6, 10-7, tying the match 4-4.
- Navarro and her opponent needed a tiebreaker in the first set, which Navarro won 7-5 en route to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win to clinch the match.
- Lebanon Valley captured the MAC Commonwealth championship in the spring of 2022.
- Navarro and Townes moved to 3-0 in singles play this fall, while Meek is 2-0.
- Goucher's 2-1 start is its best since 2018-19.
- Goucher wraps up the fall on Saturday, October 8 when it hosts the Goucher Invitational.
