Gophers Open Spring Season With Win at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Led by a sweep of doubles, the Goucher College women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 6-3 win over Saint Mary's Colege of Maryland at Somerset Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.
- Goucher (3-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Seahawks (2-1).
- At No. 1, Jessica Townes (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) were 8-5 winners.
- Shelby Meek (Halethorpe, Md./Catonsville) and Sarai Oquendo Silveira (Houston, Texas/Harmony School of Discovery) pulled out an 8-4 win at No. 3.
- Eliza Abady (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters School) and Natalia Navarro (Francisco Morazan, Honduras / Del Campo School) posted an 8-0 sweep at No. 2.
- The Gophers took a 4-0 lead when Navarro registered a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1.
- The Seahawks won at No. 2, 3 and 4 to pull within 4-3.
- At No. 2, McCaffrey forced a third set before falling 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.
- Townes won her first set at No. 3 before dropping a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 decision.
- Abady clinched the match for Goucher with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5.
- Silveira closed out the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 6.
- Goucher's 3-1 start is its best since 2018-19.
- Navarro improved to 4-0 in dual match singles action this season
- Goucher returns to action Saturday when it travels to Salisbury for a 1 pm match.
- The Gophers spring home opener is set for Tuesday, March 14 against Division II Kutztown at 3:30 pm at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
