Gophers Hold Off Moravian on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - With the match tied 4-4, junior Sarai Oquendo Silveira pulled out a three-set win at No. 6 singles to lift Goucher College to a 5-4 Landmark Conference women's tennis victory over Moravian University Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
- Goucher (10-7, 7-2 Landmark) jumped rallied for a 2-1 doubles lead over Moravian (13-4, 6-2).
- After the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead, Natalia Navarro and Eliza Abady rallied from down 6-3 to post an 8-6 win at No. 1.
- Lucy Ingraham and Jessica Townes were 8-7 (7-5) winners at No. 2 to push the Gophers in front.
- Shelby Meek blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to put the Gophers in front 3-1.
- Abady's 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 put Goucher up 4-1.
- The Greyhounds took wins at the top three flights to tie the match 4-4.
- At No. 1, Navarro took the first set before falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
- Ingraham also won her first set at No. 2 before dropping a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision.
- Siggen lost to her opponent 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3.
- Oquendo Silveira held off her opponent at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3.
- Oquendo Silveira trailed 3-2 in the third set before winning the final four games to close out the match.
- Goucher has won three in a row and six of its last seven matches.
- With their regular season complete, the Gophers are tied with the Greyhounds and Scranton (5-2) in the loss column for second in the Landmark Conference standings.
- Moravian closes out its conference slate at Catholic Saturday, while the Royals are at Lycoming Wednesday and Juniata Friday.
- Meek posted her sixth straight singles victory, while Oquendo Silveira won her third in a row.
- Ingraham and Townes won their fourth straight doubles match.
- Goucher reached the 10-win mark for the second straight season, the first time the Gophers have won at least 10 matches in back-to-back seasons since 2011-12 and 2012-13.
- Prior to the match the Gophers honored lone senior Aaliyah Ybarra.
- Goucher is idle until the next week's six-team Landmark Conference Championship.
- The tournament begins Tuesday, April 30 with first round matches, while the semifinals are set for Thursday, May 2.
- The Gophers will learn their final seed following the conclusion of Saturday's matches.
