Phillips Ties Macaluso's 2008 Long Jump Record of 16-10.5
TOWSON, Md. — Nobody in the history of Goucher's women's outdoor track and field program had ever finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in under 12 minutes nor had anybody ever tossed the javelin farther than 99 feet — until today. With the Gophers competing at the Towson Invitational, Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York) broke her own school record in the steeplechase and Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) turned in the program's all-time best effort in the javelin.
Zidanic placed third in her event, which she completed in 11:48.93, taking 23.2 seconds off her former school record set at the 2011 Landmark Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Rain's effort of 99'8" landed her in ninth place today in the javelin competition, but she passed Catherine Abbondanza in the record book. Abbondanza set the former mark of 99' back in 2006.
Destiny Phillips (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) didn't break any school records, but she did tie one with her performance of 16'10 1/2" in the long jump, good for fourth place. The record she matched was originally set in 2008 by Dana Macaluso.
Phillips also placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (:15.34) and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.32). In both races, all of the hurdlers who finished ahead of her were from Division I institutions.
Christine Cherry (Laurel, Md./Meade) placed fifth overall in the 10,000-meter run (44:33.13).
There was no team scoring.
