ARLINGTON, VA — Goucher went out in the first round
of the Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament for the
ninth straight year when top-seeded Marymount turned back the
Gophers, 3-0, tonight.
Game scores were 30-14, 30-18, 30-19.
The last time the Gophers were victorious in the tournament's
opening round was in 1997 when they defeated St. Mary's (Md.), 3-0
(15-5, 17-15, 15-2).
The Saints (23-8) were never seriously threatened in either of the
first two games on tonight's match, but in the third game, the
Gophers (16-14) trailed by only a point as late as 14-13.
Leaders for Marymount were Lauren Gay with 15 kills, Julia Ralston
with 19 digs and Bea Livioco with 38 assists.
Megan Smith (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach
Polytechnic) supplied the Gophers with 11 kills and 11
digs.
Despite the loss, Goucher finished a season with a winning record
for the first time since the 1998 squad went 21-16.
