CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Trailing 2-1 after three games, Goucher prevailed in the final two games tonight to earn a 24-30, 30-27, 26-30, 30-24, 15-12 victory over Washington (Md.).
The Gophers (8-8) took command in the decisive fifth game when, with the score tied at 3-3, they proceeded to win nine of the next 12 points to take a 12-6 lead. The Shorewomen (5-9) battled back to close to within 14-12 before a kill by Megan Smith (Honolulu, HI/Long Beach Polytechnic) produced match point for Goucher.
Smith finished with a double-double of 22 kills and 18 digs, leading the Gophers in both categories. It was the fourth time in her career that the sophomore outside hitter has surpassed 20 kills in a match.
Kasey Quinn (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) also recorded double-digit totals in kills (19) and digs (16). Rachel Hirsen (Los Angeles, CA/Buckley School) supplied the Gophers with 10 kills; Sarah Kendall (North Plainfield, NJ/Rutgers Prep) contributed 15 digs to the win.
The Gophers came up one short of the school record for most assists in a five-game match. Including the 39 assists credited to Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Delhi, India/American Embassy School) and the 21 to Catie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca), Goucher finished with 68 assists. Sauvage-Mar also served six aces.
This was the first time this season that the Gophers have been involved in a five-game match. During Michael Bossom's tenure as Goucher's head coach, his teams are 3-2 in matches that go to a decisive fifth game.
