Crissey's Two Kills Come at Crucial Times vs. Merchant MarineOct. 6, 2007
TOWSON, Md. - On the same day that Goucher was eliminated from the chase for a spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs, the Gophers registered their first victory over a conference opponent in more than six years.
The day for the Gophers began with a 3-0 loss to Moravian. Game scores were 30-18, 30-16, 30-22.
Later, head coach Michael Bossom's squad defeated U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 3-0. Game scores were 30-16, 33-31, 32-30.
The win was Goucher's first over a conference opponent since the Gophers were members of the Capital Athletic Conference and knocked off Mary Washington, 3-0 (30-28, 32-30, 30-17), on Oct. 5, 2001.
Carolyn Crissey (Philadelphia, PA/Creative & Performing Arts) had only two kills in the match against Merchant Marine (7-10, 0-4 Landmark), but both were with the Mariners needing the next point to win a game. The Gophers were trailing 31-30 in the second game when Crissey saved the day with her first kill; her second came in the third game with Merchant Marine leading 30-29.
Megan Smith (Honolulu, HI/Long Beach Polytechnic) supplied the Gophers with team-high totals of 13 kills and 14 digs against Merchant Marine.
Kasey Quinn (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Smith combined for 16 kills and 23 digs in the Moravian (13-7, 2-2 Landmark) match.
By the time all five Landmark Conference matches were played today, three of the spots in the conference playoffs had been sewed up by Juniata, Catholic and Scranton. Moravian and Susquehanna were both still alive in the hunt for the fourth spot.
