MADISON, N.J. - The Landmark Conference announced today that 32 student-athletes have been honored with selection to the 2007 Fall Landmark All-Academic Team. Two male and two female athletes from each of the eight Landmark institutions make up the team which recognizes athletes who have excelled athletically and academically.
Goucher's four representatives on the Fall Landmark All-Academic Team are J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School), a senior runner on the women's cross country team, Julien Greco (Shutesbury, MA/St. George's School), a sophmore forward on the men's soccer team, Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central), a sophomore runner on the men's cross country team, and Megan Smith (Honolulu, HI/Long Beach Polytechnic), a sophomore outside hitter on the volleyball team.
Nominees could compete in any of the Landmark fall sports and had to be a sophomore, junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Coles, who will graduate in May with a degree in psychology, is the only runner in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships where she placed 210th in a field of 280 runners earlier this month. During her outstanding career with the Gophers, she earned all-conference honors all four years and was an all-region performer in 2006 as a junior and again in 2007. In addition to being a psychology major, Coles has minors in education and art.
Greco, an international relations major, was a second-team selection on the ESPn The Magazine 2007 Academic All-District II College Division Men's Soccer Team. He supplied the Gophers with eight goals and four assists and was the co-leader in the Landmark Conference with 20 points.
Martin was Goucher's top performer in the Landmark Conference Championship, completing the 8,000-meter race in 29:27, good for 18th place. He recorded the fastest time for a Goucher runner in an 8K this season by finishing the Paul Short Invitational in 28:18. He is an English major with a minor in enivornmental studies.
Smith, a two-year starter at outside hitter for the Gophers, was a second-team selection on the inaugural All-Landmark Conference Volleyball Team. She broke the school record for kills in a season with her total of 424 in 2007, and also set a new single-match school record for kills with her 29-kill performance against Messiah in the final match of the season.Smith is a history major with a minor in biology.
The team features 13 seniors, 12 juniors and six sophomores, and
