Hitting Numbers Drop Considerably After Winning First Set
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Goucher's 2010 season came to a close tonight when the Gophers were ousted from the Landmark Conference postseason tournament by Moravian. The Greyhounds defeated the Gophers, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-15.
The first set was the Gophers' most productive in terms of hitting: nine kills, five errors and a .111 attack percentage. But after grabbing the 1-0 lead, their attack percentage dropped considerably over the next three sets to .062 in the second set and .029 in the third before bottoming out at .000 in the final set.
The Greyhounds (22-10), on the other hand, put up relatively weak hitting numbers in the opening set, including a .109 attack percentage, but they turned it on after that. They had 15 kills and a .394 attack percentage in the second set, followed by 15 more kills and a .344 attack percentage in the third.
Between them, senior opposite hitter Kasey Quinn (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and freshman outside hitter Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) supplied the Gophers (7-22) with 22 kills. Quinn had 13 digs to go along with her 13 kills; Chalk turned in a nine-kill, 13-dig performance.
Sophomore Ashley Fan (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who served as Goucher's libero, racked up a match-high 27 kills.
Senior setter Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Delhi, India/American Embassy School) was credited with 26 assists and 11 digs in the final match of her career.
By winning, Moravian advances to face top-seeded Juniata in the semifinals this Saturday.
