Gophers Crush Beavers, Bow to Avenging Angels in Five Sets

BALTIMORE, Md. — Goucher had a chance to come away with a split of its four matches at the season-opening Johns Hopkins Invitational, but the Gophers bowed to Meredith, 3-2, in the final match this afternoon.
Set scores were 24-26, 29-27, 23-25, 25-17, 16-14.
The Gophers (1-3) came up short against the Avenging Angels (2-2) despite a record-breaking performance by sophomore middle hitter Trish Kallis (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). Kallis reached double figures in kills (10) and blocks (12), setting a new school record for most blocks in a five-set match. The former record of 10 blocks was established by Janet Limmer against Salisbury back in 1996.
Sophomore outside hitter Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) supplied the Gophers with 18 kills and sophomore setter Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was credited with 42 assists.
In the other match the Gophers played today, they were beaten by DeSales, 3-0 (26-24, 25-10, 25-21 despite a 10-kill, 11-dig effort by Chalk. With the victory, the Bulldogs (3-0) extended their winning streak against Goucher to five matches.
Goucher's opponents on Friday, the opning day of the tournament, were Johns Hopkins and City (N.Y.). The Blue Jays pinned a 3-0 setback on the Gophers, winning 25-7, 25-7, 25-15; head coach Michael Bossom's squad defeated the Beavers, 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-13).
The Blue Jays (1-0) achieved an impressive .525 hitting percentage in their sweep of the Gophers.
Kallis and freshman outside hitter Kristen Courage (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) combined for 15 kills and 19 digs against the Beavers (0-2).
Kallis, who totaled 28 kills and 18 blocks in the four matches, and Rain, who finished with 82 assists, both represented Goucher on the all-tournament team.
