Mustangs Turn Back Gophers to Remain Unbeaten in 2011

Instead the Mustangs, after breezing to a 25-7 victory in the opening set and rallying to win the second set, 25-22, were able to finish off the 3-0 sweep of head coach Michael Bossom's squad by coming out on top in the third set, 25-9.
Goucher's only leads in the opening set were 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before Stevenson went ahead for good on a service ace by Christine Isenberg that made the score 4-3. The Gophers picked up only four more points the rest of the way: one on a block by Trish Kallis (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), another on a kill by Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and the remaining two on service errors by the Mustangs (6-0).
A block by Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Addie Lanzarotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City) provided the Gophers (1-4) with a 20-16 advantage in the middle set, but the Mustangs answered by capturing the next seven points, going ahead for the first time on a kill by Kristin Steinnagel.
A kill by Kristen Courage (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) accounted for Goucher's only point early on in the third set a Stevenson jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
Chalk supplied the Gophers with a team-high total of seven kills and was credited with 10 digs.
