Kennelly Opens Match with Service Ace for Goucher
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — A rally by Goucher in the third set was not enough to overcome a balanced effort from Stevenson tonight as the Mustangs defeated the Gophers, 3-0.
Set scores were 25-10, 25-10, 25-18.
The Gophers (3-10) earned the first point of the match thanks to a service ace by freshman outside hitter Sami Kennelly (Howell, N.J. / Howell ), but the Mustangs (12-1) never trailed the rest of the way. They overcame the early deficit to claim a 12-1 advantage in the opening set.
In the third set, Goucher managed to knock a 14-5 lead for Stevenson down to 14-9 by taking four straight points, but that was as close as head coach Michael Bossom's Gophers would get.
Freshman setter Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) assisted 14 of Goucher's 15 kills in the match, six of which went to junior outside hitter Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park).
A total of 12 players recorded kills for Stevenson, led by 10 from Avery Gabbard.
