After earning a side out to open the match, St. Mary's (9-4) took nine more points on Jenn Rindone's service to race out to an insurmountable lead in the first set while holding the Gophers to 15 points, despite a brief run by Goucher (4-12) to pull within six at one point.
The Gophers got off to a good start, earning the first three points of the next set, but could not hold the lead, finally ceding the lead for good on an attacking error at 6-6.
Goucher took the lead in the third set at 8-7 on the service of Sami Kennelly (Howell, N.J. /Howell) and extended the lead to 16-13 with Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md. /Centennial) serving. After taking that lead, however, St. Mary's rallied for seven consecutive points and never relinquished that edge.
The match leader in kills was Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md. /Severna Park) with 11.
