Gophers Polish Off Mariners to Begin Landmark Play

Untimely Hitting Error Ruins Shot at Taking Set from Royals

Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) knocked down 12 kills in the 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 win over the Mariners (8-7, 0-1 Landmark). Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led the Gophers with 13 digs, plus she and Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) combined for 28 assists.
The Greyhounds (14-4, 1-1 Landmark) finished with a .256 attack percentage as they defeated head coach Michael Bossom's squad in three sets. Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, 25-17.
The Gophers also lasted only three sets in both of today's matches even though they were serving to win the second set of their encounter with Scranton. An untimely hitting error — one of 17 Goucher committed in the match — allowed the Royals (14-8, 1-1 Landmark) to tie the score at 24-24 and proceed on to a 25-17, 26-24, 25-21 victory.
Ashley Fan (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was credited with 21 digs, but the Gophers (5-15, 1-3 Landmark) committed another 15 hitting errors as they bowed to the Cardinals (13-5, 3-0 Landmark) in the final match of the weekend for both teams. Set scores were 25-14, 25-19, 25-21.
