Gophers Tally 10 Service Aces in the Match
TOWSON, Md. — In the last home match in the careers of Ashley Fan (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Sabina Smajlovic (Hartford, Conn./Miss Porter's School), it was only appropriate that the two Gopher seniors would combine on the match's final kill.
With Goucher (8-22) up 24-20 in the third set, already having won the first two, Fan cleanly dug the ball, setting up Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). The setter, Fan's high school teammate, passed the ball over to Smajlovic up the middle to close out a 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 win over Notre Dame (Md.).
Rain's final assist gave her a team-high 22 for the match.
In addition, Rain had three of the team's 10 aces. Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Addie Lanzarotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City) matched Rain's total as co-leaders in aces, with Smajlovic adding one.
Chalk had a match-high 10 kills and her 11 digs trailed only Fan's 16 for the team lead.
Cortney Silvis excelled for Notre Dame (6-14), blocking nine Goucher attack attempts and earning nine kills, both team highs.
