SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Goucher, hoping to avoid coming out of the first weekend of Landmark Conference play without a win, had Moravian on the ropes today. Unfortunately, the Gophers, who had the Greyhounds down two sets to none at one point, weren't able to complete their task.
Instead Moravian, thanks in large part to a 20-kill performance out of Lauren Hostetler, overcame the 2-0 deficit to emerge with a 3-2 victory. Set scores were 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-11.
The Greyhounds (9-10, 1-0 Landmark) saved their best for last, at least in terms of hitting. Their highest team attack percentage in any of the first four games was .167 in the third game, but in the decisive fifth set, they delivered 11 kills and made only three hitting errors for a .286 attack percentage.
By comparison, the Gophers (9-13, 0-3 Landmark) had a .233 attack percentage in the second set and .212 in the third, but with the match on the line, they were limited to two kills and made three hitting errors in the fifth set (-.056).
Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) both reached double figures in kills and digs for Goucher. Chalk supplied the Gophers with 14 kills and 19 digs; Rain with 10 kills and 16 digs.
Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) was credited with 39 assists and Addie Lanzarotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City) finished with seven kills and five blocks, including three solos, in Goucher's fourth five-set match of the season.
