SALISBURY, Md. -- In its return to non-conference play, the Goucher volleyball team had no answers tonight against a Salisbury squad which has qualified for the NCAA tournament in five of the last six seasons, as the Sea Gulls cruised to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-12 victory.
Goucher (9-17) has now lost seven straight, while Salisbury (23-4) has won six of seven.
The Gophers never led in the first set, with Salisbury not looking back after jumping out to an early 8-3 advantage. Goucher gave its best effort in the second set, and a kill from Hannah Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional) gave the Gophers an 11-10 edge midway through the frame. The Sea Gulls, though, rattled off the next four points to regain control and they would not trail again.
Goucher reduced Salisbury's lead to 5-4 in the third set after a kill from Addie Lanzarotta (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City). The Sea Gulls would then win the next seven points on their way to closing out the match.
Lanzarotta had a strong effort for the Gophers, finishing with five kills (on a .444 attack percentage), five digs and the team's lone ace. Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led Goucher with seven kills, while Corinne Kahler (York, Pa./York Country Day) paced the team with eight digs.
The Gophers return to the Eastern Shore on Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup at Washington (Md.). The Shorewomen (17-7) won this year's Goucher Invitational back in September.
