DOVER, Del. — A successful block by Michelle Tweedie (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln Community School) gave Goucher the point it needed to win the third set and finish off a 3-0 victory over Wesley this evening.
Set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 25-22.
The match appeared headed for a fourth set when the Wolverines (6-2) took a 22-21 lead in the third on a kill by Tatum Jones, but the Gophers prevented that from happening by scoring the final four points of the match. Tweedie's kill, which was set up by Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), produced the point that created a 22-22 tie and got Goucher back in the serve.
The Gophers (4-5) went ahead 23-22 when they were awarded a point for a setting error by the home team and they claimed the next point on another kill by Tweedie, with an assist going to Erika DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) this time.
It was on an attempt by Jones for a kill to keep her team's chances alive that Tweedie made the solo block for Goucher's 25th point of the set.
Tweedie finished with a team-high total of 10 kills and five blocks. She made only two hitting errors in 23 attempts to wind up with a .348 attack percentage for the match.
Johnson supplied the Gophers with 19 kills and Val Kirsch (Westport, Conn./Staples) with 12 digs.
The first set was knotted up at 6-6 before a service error by Wesley put Goucher ahead to stay. The Gophers jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the second set, securing two of those points on service aces by DiPasquale and one on a kill by Hannah Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional).
Goucher will play at home for only the second time this season when it welcomes St. Mary's (Md.) to the Decker Sports & Recreation Center for a match on Friday at 7 p.m.
