Gophers Can't Duplicate Success Against Cardinals
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's effort in the first set of tonight's Landmark Conference match against Catholic was reminiscent of the determined performance the Gophers gave last season when they defeated the Cardinals for the first time since 1998.
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's effort in the first set of tonight's Landmark Conference match against Catholic was reminiscent of the determined performance the Gophers gave last season when they defeated the Cardinals for the first time since 1998.
But after coming up only four points short in the opening set of the best-of-five match, head coach Kelli Wilkinson's squad watched Catholic take firm control of the match, wrapping up a victory in just three sets.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-11, 25-11.
Ironically, the first set was the only one in which the Gophers (6-8, 0-1 Landmark) never held the lead.
Hannah Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional) and Kelly Budge (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) both recorded three kills in the first set, but then they combined for just three more in the remaining two sets.
Michelle Tweedie (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln Community School) did not register her first kill until the first point of the second set, but she went on to finish with a team-high total of six.
For the Cardinals (9-7, 1-0 Landmark), who achieved a .293 hitting percentage, Maria Juelle and Audrey Bizak finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Up next for the Gophers is another home match, this time on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Washington (Md.).
