TOWSON, Md. - Down by 10 points with 4:25 left to play tonight, Goucher held Maryland Bible to just one point the rest of the way and pulled out a season-opening 78-73 victory over the Eagles.
The Gophers (1-0) went ahead for the first time the entire contest at 74-73 on a lay-up by Ian Brown (Durban, South Africa/Glenwood Boys) with 1:07 remaining. Donte Brandon (Washington, DC/Westlake) scored Goucher's final four points, hitting a short jumper with :18 showing on the clock to make the score 76-73, and then converting a pair of free throws with :03 left to play.
The Eagles (3-3) led by as many 15 points in each half, but they went 0-for-4 from the field and committed three turnovers on their final seven possessions.
Cameron Brown (Baltimore, MD/Owings Mills) was the leading scorer for Goucher as he supplied the Gophers with 21 points. Ian Brown finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the first double-double of his career.
Six players new to Goucher's roster this season got into the scoring act tonight. Brandon had eight points to go along with six assists in his collegiate debut, and Michael Schaerr (Derwood, MD/Magruder) also came off the bench to score eight points.
All five starters for Maryland Bible scored in double figures, but the Eagles' bench produced only four points. Tim Squire led the way with 20 points.
