The Goucher men's golf program hosted the Goucher Fall Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland.
The Gopher's had the lead after round one on Monday but struggled on day two to finish in a tie for second place with Southern Virginia University, 18 shots behind champion Drew University. Head Coach Hunter Brown commented on the two days "I was excited for the team to earn the lead after round one. Tuesday was a rough day for us though. We're disappointed with the outcome and are all committed to learning from this experience."
First-year Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas) led the Gophers with scores of 81-86 finishing in 6th place. Evan Yue (Beijing, China) was second with scores of 89-84, Steph Lee (Manalapan, NJ) added rounds of 81-95, Wade Howard (Weston, FL) posted 91-91, and Logan Smith (Dallas, TX) scored a first round 76 but was disqualified in round two.
Joe Burns (Kinnelon, NJ) had a notable finish playing as an individual, and not in the team scoring, as he posted a 81-86 and ended up in a tie for 4th.
Hillendale Country Club proved to be a tough test for all the teams in the inaugural year of the Goucher Fall Invitational and produced abnormally high scores amongst the competitors. "Hillendale is such a test around the greens and if you are not sharp with the short game the shots add up quickly. That makes it both a challenging and great championship venue." The Gopher's plan to host the event again next fall.
The Goucher Fall Invitational concludes the fall season for the Gophers. They will return to the links in March of 2018.
