MOOSIC, Pa. - History was made on Sunday at soggy Glenmaura National Country Club outside of Scranton, as the Goucher College men's golf team held off six other teams to take the first Landmark Conference Championship.
The Gophers finished the two-day event with a combined team score of 649 (315-334) to hold off the tournament host University of Scranton (328-324 - 652) to take the Landmark team title by three shots.
The feat for Goucher was even more impressive as the Gopher program is in its first year of competition this season, sporting a line-up of all first-year players. Scranton, meanwhile, played their first season of intercollegiate competition in 1948.
Individually, Goucher's highest finisher was first-year Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J.), who finished in a tie for third after carding a two-day score of 160 (77-83). Just behind Lee and teammate and fellow first-year Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas), who finished fifth with a score of 161 (77-84).
Two other Gophers also finished in the top ten for the weekend. First-year Evan Yue (Beijing, China) placed in a tie for seventh with a two-day score of 164 (80-84), while fellow first-year Joe Burns (Kinnelon, N.J.) finished in ninth by himself with a score of 165 (81-84).
Rounding out the finishers for Goucher was first-year Wade Howard (Weston, Fla.) who placed in a tie for 11th overall (84-83 - 167).
The Landmark Conference crown for the Gophers finishes off a banner first season as a program for Goucher and head coach Hunter Brown, in which Goucher captured one tournament in the Fall and another to end the Spring on Sunday.
With the Landmark Conference Championship, Goucher also clinched the Conference's automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Tournament, which will be played from May 15 through the 18 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
